Four months ago, there was no fishing club at Virginia Tech. Today, we are talking to some editors from ESPN about everything we can dream of that relates the sport. How did we get here so quickly?
My name is Scott Wiley and I am the President of the Bass Fishing Team at Virginia Tech. I proudly represent our school with three other guys who share the same passion for the sport. Charlie Machek, Brett Thompson, and Chase Grinnell are the supporting cast. Four people strong, we are rapidly growing as a club and plan to have a championship-caliber fishing program before long.
We are all from the Richmond area and went to the same high school. At college, I got this insane idea that maybe Virginia Tech could have a Bass Fishing team. After trying to figure out how difficult it would be to form a club, I learned what it takes: one damn piece of paperwork. To officially become a student organization (fishing club), all we had to do was submit a form to the student center saying who we were. I knew these three guys would jump all over the opportunity to fish for our school, so we were up and ready in no time. I guess it pays to win the first tournament that you ever fish in, because I seriously doubt that I would be writing this if we had gotten dead last.
Look out for our club in the next few months. We are working on getting support through sponsorship, putting our name out there, and fishing in between. Smith Mountain Lake is the perfect place for us to get our foot in the door and with the pros right beside us, there is no better place. Look for us on the lake or at the weigh in because we will be there representing the Bass Fishing Club at Virginia Tech.
